The full moon hung low and heavy, casting a hazy glow over her familiar spot. It was the place she always came to, with the pond mirroring the moon, and the ancient gazebo twined with green ivy. The swans swam freely here, and she remembered how he'd told her that the elegant alabaster birds choose their mate for life. "Together forever," he'd said. "Just like us." But there was only one white bird on the waters tonight, and only one lone soul on the shore. She put her head in her hands and fell asleep on the rocks, dreaming of him. He was far away in the waking world, but right beside her in her dreams. "Send me a sign," she pleaded, "that I might know you're well." He made a promise. She woke thinking of his smile. Her bright eyes took in the same familiar sight as always. The pond, the moon, the sparkling night. But when she lifted her head, she saw a swooping white moth glistening in the moonlight. He always kept his promises...
